Annotation

The article considers the party system evolution in Japan since 1993, particularly the LDP?DPJ two-party rivalry. It has been proven that in Japan at the beginning of the new century the tendency of transition from “system 1955” to a two-major-party system and then to the two-party system appeared. But in spite of the impact of the new electoral system a two-party system was not formed. It is shown that the process of working out the policy in Japan is ineffective due to the lack of strong leadership and weak prime ministers. The article gives definitions and suggests different classifications of party systems in Japan.

Key words: political culture, ideology, political system, Liberal Democratic Party, party factions, party systems, electoral systems, left-right continuum, elections.
