Annotation

The article discusses the usage of obscene words in a translingual novel by Ellen Litman and the perception of calquing of these words by English users (of British, Russian and Chinese origins). The author’s choice to introduce the direct translation of stylistically and culturally loaded words may contribute to the creating of the cultural background for the plot but it can easily lead to misunderstanding of the author’s intentions.

Key words: translingual literature, calquing, stylistics, text perception.
