PECULIARITIES OF LINGUA FRANCA COMMUNICATION IN ASIA-PACIFIC: PROBLEMS OF EAST ASIAN ACCENT PERCEPTION

Annotation

The article presents the findings of the study of English verbal communication in Asia-Pacific. The focus is the sound system of East Asian English varieties and problems of its perception by native English speakers. The article describes the method of identifying problem areas in the perception of English accented speech by native speakers, and the results of the data analysis. The author concludes that there is a possibility to make a description of accent typology in English speech by Chinese, Korean and Japanese speakers, as well as to develop strategies of the accented speech perception.
