WE IN THE EXPANDING CIRCLE NEED OUR OWN MODELS TOO! QUEST FOR EQUALITY IN WORLD ENGLISHES
Nobuyuki Hino

Hino, Nobuyuki – Professor, Graduate School of Language and Culture (Master Level), Osaka University (Japan), a member of the International Association for World Englishes (IAWE).

Annotation

The author argues that English studied as a foreign language should have the status of a rightful variety similar to the postcolonial transplanted varieties which act as a second official language of their states. The British-American teaching models imposed on English language learners in other countries cannot be conducive to expressing ethnic values and cultures of other nations.

Key words: variant, regional variants, English as lingua franca, English as an international language, model of teaching.
