Annotation

The principal ways of the development of foreign language education in Russia in the 18th -19th centuries are shown in this article. The author of the article pays attention to the place of foreign languages in school curricula in those times. According to the opinion of the majority of educationists, the role of "foreign languages" as a school subject was to develop moral personal priorities and spiritual characteristics.

        Key words: education, gymnasia, communicative, personal-orientated approaches, humane way of education, pedagogical ideas and schooling principles in education.
