Annotation

With an eye to a cognitive linguistics approach, this paper offers a way to draw a division between metaphors within the generic-level category of metaphor in science (and scientific language) with a focus on proper scientific metaphors. The science-institutionalizing concepts of scientific paradigm and discourse are introduced to support an attempt to differentiate between metaphors. Conceptual metaphor is compared to and contrasted with analogy, model and paradigm. Metaphors in physical science theories are used as study material.

Key words: conceptual metaphor, metaphor in science, scientific metaphor, core metaphor, entailments, metaphorical mental space, paradigm, model, analogy, epistemic and discourse practice, paradigm metaphor, discourse metaphor.
