The article describes the formation of education in the sphere of Oriental Studies in the Russian Far East at the end of the 19th century. The author focuses her attention on the significance of the establishment of the Institute of Oriental Studies as a state policy tool in the resolution of foreign policy problems. The author distinguishes preconditions for the opening of the Institute and shows the importance of the oriental languages for the purposes of forming communicative competence in future orientalists.
