TRANSITION FROM ETHNIC STEREOTYPES TO SHARED IDENTITY IN MULTICULTURAL CONTEXT
Lebedko M. G.

Lebedko, Maria Grigorevna – Doctor of Philology, Professor, Head of the English Language History Department, Institute of Foreign Languages, Far Eastern National University.

Annotation

The article addresses ethnic stereotypes in a multicultural context and looks for more effective ways of managing them in the light of cognitive theories. The analysis suggests that to considerably reduce ethnic stereotypes one has to build shared identity. It was found that de-stereotyping is possible due to a cognitive mechanism that makes deductions based on relevant facts about an individual with whom someone shares identity.

Key words: multiculturalism, multicultural context, intercultural communication, stereotyping, ethnic stereotypes, shared identity, cognitive theory, cognitive mechanisms, categorization.
