"SMENOVEKHOVSTVO" ("CHANGING OF SIGNPOSTS") IN A CONTEXT OF THE POLITICAL COMPROMISE WITH THE SOVIET AUTHORITY
Lymar S. I.

Annotation

This article is a research into the evolution of the Smenovekhovstvo social and political movement during the period when it was looking for an ideological and political compromise with the Soviet government. It is underlined that in the basis of the compromise was a forced confession by the Smenovekhovtsy that Etatism and the territorial integrity of the nation are superior to any ideological and partisan differences, and one should bear with the Bolshevik regime as long the Bolsheviks are protecting the territorial integrity. The author deems that the most important contribution of the Smenovekhovsty was their attempt to develop a new ideology of Russia's revival which was later called National Bolshevism. Considering the Bolsheviks' New Economic Policy to be the "economical Brest-Litovsk of Bolshevism", they were hoping for Soviet Russia to gradually evolve into a bourgeois republic based on the foundations of a strong and stable government, state and private economy, and patriotism.
